Honor Flight

Veteran application

 Guardian application

The Honor Flight Network is a national charitable organization established in 2005, shortly after completion of the National WWII Memorial on the Mall in Washington D.C.  The organization's mission is to provide free transportation with dedicated companion guardians for each veteran to visit the new memorial.  Companion guardians are frequently sons, daughters or grandchildren.  Otherwise, guardians are volunteers wanting to help honor the veterans. There are 130 local chapters in 45 states. Since its inception, Honor Flight has escorted over 200,000 veterans to Washington.  Over the years, Honor Flight has expanded their mission to include Korean War and Vietnam veterans and now also visits the memorials to those wars.  There are over 38,000 veterans on the waiting list for the opportunity to make this trip.

For ten years, our local chapter was Honor Flight Historic Triangle, with headquarters in Williamsburg.  They drew veterans from central and southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. They conducted twenty missions with four buses on each trip.  Missions included stops at the WWII Memorial, the Korean Memorial, the Viet Nam Memorial, the Arlington National Cemetery, The MarineCorps Museum at Quantico and some other area memorials, as time permits.  Three meals are also provided during the mission.  There is no cost for the veteran. Guardians pay their own cost.  Due to our proximity to Washington and our ability to add buses as needed, we have no waiting list.  Honor Flight is capable of taking veterans in wheelchairs.  There is an emergency medical technician on each bus and one medical doctor on each mission to assure the safety of all the veterans.

In 2019, the chapter became the Old Dominion Honor Flight.  Veterans or guardians desiring to participate can fill out the application and mail it to the address shown on the application. A link to the pdf form is on this page.

This is a amazing experience for both veteran and guardian. Those that have been participants have always expressed sincere appreciation for the opportunity.
