Honor Flight Rescheduled for 23 April 2022

2022 Itinerary

The 16 October Honor flight has been postponed until 23 April 2022. Due to the continuing battle against the Covid-19 virus the Board of Directors for the Old Dominion Honor Flight (ODHF) made the tough decision to suspend the 16 October mission.  Korean War Veterans Memorial is undergoing renovation, so the statues are covered, and a portion of the memorial is closed until spring of 2022. This Memorial is awesome and since the ODHF is encouraging Korean War Veterans to participate in the Honor flight, not being able to fully appreciate the Korean War Memorial would be a disappointment. ODHF puts the health and safety of the Veterans first and wants to ensure that the Honor Flight does not expose the veterans to any health risk.

The Old Dominion Honor Flight Chapter is scheduling its Mission #3 for 23 April 2022.  All veterans and guardians must have received vaccinations and, as of now, masks will be required on the bus. Questions related to COVID have been added to the applications so this will require new applications to be submitted by both veterans and guardians. The application forms will be provided on the VIPMOAA website and will be available from the Patriots Colony Activities Director’s Office.

For the benefit of those new to this area in the last eighteen months, the Old Dominion Honor Flight is calling all Vietnam, Korean and World War II veterans to join their second free mission trip to Washington to see your national monuments.  A Vietnam veteran is anyone who served in the service during the Vietnam War period, regardless of where they were or what they were doing.

The Old Dominion Honor Flight Chapter is a new chapter, replacing the previous Historic Triangle Honor Flight Chapter which was initiated in 2009 with a focus on WWII veterans. A few years later, Korean War veterans were invited.   A few years after that, Vietnam veterans were invited.  Then after ten years (twenty missions) and after taking over a thousand veterans to Washington, the local chapter of the Honor Flight network ended its operations.  Matt Hartman, Director of the local Honor Flight Chapter, said, “The opportunity for veterans to see their memorials is an experience not to be missed”.  The universal reaction has been sincere enjoyment and appreciation.

Every veteran will be provided a guardian to assure their safety for the day.  Honor Flight also provides a staff of paramedics on the trip.  Sons, daughters, and grandchildren may proudly serve this purpose but, in most cases, it is a trained volunteer.  National policy does not allow spouses to serve as guardians. Over two dozen extra wheelchairs are loaded on the buses so that any veteran that finds the day tiring can simply allow their guardian to escort them in one of these chairs.  For those veterans that cannot get on the bus on their own, the bus has a wheelchair lift. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided during the day at no cost to the veteran.  Veterans wanting to go on a future Honor Flight trip must submit an application or call toll-free to 1-800-619-0578 or 757-655-4342.

The local send-off and return for Williamsburg veterans will be determined as final agenda planning proceeds.  If you need transportation to or from the send-off location or if you have any questions, contact Jack Greenhalgh, 757 478-8172, jack.greenhalgh@cox.net.  If you had previously applied for the postponed missions, Jack Greenhalgh will attempt  to get new applications forms to you.
