    CDR Grey Wooten, JROTC Speaker

    CDR Wooten is the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Tabb High School Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) in Yorktown, Virginia. 

    CDR Gray Wooten graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1987.  He attended Surface Warfare and Steam Engineering Schools in Newport Rhode Island. He served as main propulsion officer onboard USS GLOVER FF 1098 until September of 1989, where he transitioned to aviation and reported for Naval Aviation Training in Pensacola Florida. After receiving his wings as a pilot in July of 1991, CDR Wooten reported to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (light) 30 and on to HSL 34 in Norfolk Va. Upon disestablishment of HSL 34, CDR Wooten reported to HSL 41 at NAS North Island, where he completed transition training to the SH-60B and served as detachment maintenance and assistant operations officer in HSL 43 from 1994-1998, completing deployments on USS GARY (FFG-51) and USS PRINCETON (CG-53).

    CDR Wooten then reported in January of 1998 to HSL 40 in Mayport Florida, where he served as the COMNAVAIRLANT SH-60B Evaluator and program manager. In 1999, CDR Wooten reported to HSL 44 in Mayport Florida, where he deployed onboard USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG-71) as Aviation Officer in Charge. He then completed his tour as the Squadron Maintenance Officer.

    In 2001, CDR Wooten reported to J9, U.S. Joint Forces Command where he served on a lessons learned team in Kabul, Afghanistan and served in the Science and Technology directorate. In early 2003, CDR Wooten deployed with the Joint Center for Operational Analysis for Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he completed two deployments to Baghdad, Iraq in support of reconstruction operations.

    In 2004, CDR Wooten reported to the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV), where he served as the Navy’s Aviation Trials Officer, completing 88 ship and trial inspections, including all new ship construction vessels from 2004-2008. Following INSURV, CDR Wooten served as Seminar Team Leader at the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va. From 2009 to 2012. After retiring in 2012, CDR Wooten performed support of Naval Forces as a contractor for Science Applications International (SAIC) and American Systems Corporation. 

     In 2013, CDR Wooten assumed duties as the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Tabb High School Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) in Yorktown Virginia, where he operated  the unit for four years as the only instructor. In 2017, the unit was reinstated to NJROTC status.

    His personal awards include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), and numerous unit and command citations. He has been married to his lovely wife Diana for 33 years and they have a son, 1st Lieutenant Connor Wooten, USA, a UH-60L Blackhawk pilot stationed in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
