Historic Jamestowne

Historic Jamestowne is a cultural heritage site located on Jamestown Island on the James River near the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. The site is the location of the 1607 James Fort and later the 17th century city of Jamestown.  Historic Jamestowne is operated as a partnership between Preservation Virginia and the US National Park Service.

Jamestown, first established in the Virginia Colony at Jamestown on May 13, 1607.  Between 1609 and 1610, the lack of local food and no supplies from England led to the “starving time” in which only 60 colonists survived. Jamestown was the capital of the virginia Colony and after the accidental second burning in 1698, the capital was moved to Middle Plantation in 1699 and renamed Williamsburg. 

The Jamestown Settlement tells the story of the arrival of the English colonists in 1607.  Extensive gallery exhibits, introductory film, and the three ships are located here for your exploration. The Susan Constant, Godspeed an Discovery are recreated ships and are accessible to visitors.
